Centre News Latest News “You Ok, Mate?” – Supporting Men’s Mental Health in Our Community The “You Ok, Mate?” project is an important initiative focused on improving men’s mental health and wellbeing across Sandwell. As many people may already be aware, men account for 79% of deaths by suicide in the borough, a statistic that highlights the urgent need for open conversations, early support, and accessible services. Mental health affects everyone at some point in their lives, whether directly or through supporting friends, family members, colleagues, or service users. This programme forms part of a wider campaign led by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council (MBC), which is dedicated to early intervention, prevention, and promoting wellbeing among men in the community. On Tuesday 28th April, “You Ok, Mate?” hosted a men’s mental health support group at our centre, in collaboration with Tough Enough to Care. The session provided a safe and supportive environment for attendees to share experiences, have open conversations, and connect with others. We were proud to offer a space where men felt comfortable gathering and engaging in meaningful discussion. Through this project, “You Ok, Mate?” are helping to create safe and supportive spaces where men can talk, connect, and access help. Key areas of discussion and activity included: Raising awareness of men’s mental health and overall wellbeing Tackling stigma and encouraging open, honest conversations about suicide Sharing lived experiences to build understanding and reduce isolation Exploring the reasons why many men find it difficult to talk about their mental health Identifying the types of support men would like to see within their local communities Providing clear information about available services and support pathways Offering opportunities for one-to-one support where needed By working collaboratively and supporting initiatives like “You Ok, Mate?”, we aim to help create a culture where it’s okay to talk and where support is easy to access. Small conversations can make a big difference and asking a simple question like “You ok, mate?” could help change, or even save, a life.
